McMeen Elementary

Happy Summer!

05/31/23, 12:53 PM

Greetings McMeen Families!

As we head into summer break, I know how hard it can be to assure your kids aren't just sitting inside all day with their electronic devices! Just this morning, Assistant Principal, Lauren Bartsch and I, were commiserating about how cranky our kids get when they don't get daily outside time.

Getting our kids (and ourselves!) outside every day is easier than we often think. Research has found that even just 20 minutes of outdoor time, daily, leads to decrease stress/anxiety and improved sense of well-being in children.  Generation Wild, a family/children's offshoot project of GOCO (Great Outdoors Colorado), provides amazing resources and ideas on how to increase our children's time outside. Attached, you will find a list of ideas on how to get our kids outside for 20 minutes a day. You can visit Generation Wild's website here: https://www.generationwild.com/

In addition, I also know that though summertime is often celebrated as a fun, exciting time, some children and adults can find summer as a time of anxieties and crisis. Please read the message and invitation, below, for a no-cost Mental Health First Aid training that is specifically designed for the general public.

Did you know, you are more likely to encounter someone in an emotional crisis than someone having a heart attack? Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify someone experiencing a mental
health crisis and connect them with help. Classes are designed for the general public and operate similarly to a physical first aid course.

There are two types of classes available:
• Adults Assisting Adults
• Adults Assisting Youth

Here are a few things you’ll learn in a Mental Health First Aid class:
• 5-step action plan to assess a situation and help
• Impact of mental and substance use disorders
• Local resources and where to turn for help

Learn more about these training sessions here.

Last, by not least, please also see the attached Denver Health School Based Centers Summer Flyer.

I hope everyone has a safe and fun summer!

Nurse Miriam
