Ongoing Student Safety Efforts

03/07/25, 3:54 PM

Dear McMeen Community,

It is our priority to inform you of events that impact our community. As some of you are aware, yesterday, post-it notes were found on a bench in the park behind our school that essentially glorify inappropriate acts against children. When we were made aware of the issue, we contacted the DPS Department of Climate and Safety who conducted extra patrols around the school at dismissal and arrival times both yesterday and today. We have also filed a report with the Denver Police Department of suspicious activity.

Some of our older students came into school today aware of the notes that were on the bench and were talking about it in the classroom. We have been addressing these conversations as they arise, sharing with students our safety protocols we always have in place.

One of our recess monitoring protocols is that there is a staff member on the field monitoring students on the field. At one point today, a staff member and some of our 5th grade students saw a man on the far side of the park that was stopped and looking towards the school with his cell phone out. While we cannot be sure what he was doing, the staff member watched the man closely and he quickly continued on his way. We immediately reported this to the DPS Department of Climate and Safety who were able to come out and patrol the park. At no time did this, or any person, get close to the playground or any students.

As a reminder, we take the safety of our students very seriously. If we see someone on school property during the day, we inquire about their purpose for being there. If they are not there for a legitimate school-related reason, they are required to leave. Our staff are hypervigilant of any possible concern.

We know that this situation can be upsetting for students and families. We encourage all parents to have a discussion with their students on stranger dangers and what they can do to stay safe if they encounter someone who is unknown to them.

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
