Maintaining Safety and Security on Our School Buses

Dear McMeen Families,
Ensuring the safety and security of our students is always our top priority. School buses are considered an extension of the classroom. This means the same level of safety and security measures that apply to our schools are also upheld on district transportation.
In light of recent events, Denver Public Schools (DPS) Transportation has collaborated with district officials to provide clear guidance to our bus drivers and dispatchers regarding the appropriate response if government officials attempt entry onto a district school bus.
Key points from this guidance include:
- Only authorized passengers are allowed to board or ride district buses.
- Drivers have the authority to screen individuals before granting access.
- If a government official approaches a bus without proper documentation, they will be asked to follow specific DPS protocols, including providing identification and purpose, without impeding their duties.
- All such incidents will immediately involve DPS dispatch and the Office of General Counsel to ensure a measured and lawful response.
These procedures are in place to ensure that every student on board continues to have a safe, secure, and uninterrupted ride to and from school.
Additionally, DPS reaffirms its commitment to equal access to public education for all students, regardless of immigration status, and respects the rights and protections guaranteed to all individuals under the U.S. Constitution.
Thank you for your continued trust and partnership in keeping our students safe.
