Message from the Principal- Kiss-and-Go closed

Dear McMeen Families,

As a reminder, the Kiss-and-Go drop-off lane is closed until further notice due to ongoing safety concerns. Excessive speeding, unauthorized parking in the staff lot, and a lack of respect for traffic procedures have led to multiple near misses, including staff members almost being hit while walking through the parking lot.

We understand that this change may be inconvenient, but safety must come first. To determine if and when we can safely reopen Kiss-and-Go, we will be reassessing the situation using the following steps:

  1. Monitoring Traffic Behavior – We will observe whether parents are following safer drop-off practices, including parking near the park and avoiding unsafe street drop-offs.
  2. Gathering Staff Input – We will check in with staff to determine whether they still feel at risk while walking through the parking lot.
  3. Encouraging Community Accountability – Safe drop-off requires the cooperation of all families. We ask that parents model and reinforce responsible driving behaviors.
  4. Considering Safety Adjustments – If necessary, we will explore additional safety measures, such as added signage, cones, or designated crossing areas.
  5. Possible Trial Reopening – If we see significant improvement, we may reopen Kiss-and-Go on a trial basis. However, unsafe behaviors will result in another closure.

In the meantime, we strongly encourage families to park near the park and walk their children to school. Do not drop your child off in the middle of the street, as this creates an even greater safety risk.

We will continue to communicate updates as we assess the situation. Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to keeping our community safe.

Sincerely,
Andria Hinman
Principal, McMeen Elementary
