Message from the Principal- Healthy Community

Dear McMeen Families,

At McMeen Elementary, we believe that keeping families informed helps us maintain a healthy and supportive learning environment. While lice are a common issue in school communities, they can be managed effectively with awareness and proper treatment. We want to share our school’s approach to handling lice so you are familiar with our protocols should the need arise.

Head lice can be an inconvenience, but they are not a health hazard, and we are committed to handling cases discreetly.

Here’s what you need to know about our protocol:

  1. Notification Process:

    • Parents will be notified only if there is a classroom outbreak, defined as two or more students identified with lice in the same class. In this case, families in the affected classroom will receive a notification to promote awareness and preventive measures.
  2. Parent Responsibility:

    • Lice checks are not conducted at school. We encourage parents to routinely check their children for lice at home. If your child has lice, please inform the school so we can monitor and respond appropriately.
  3. Student Attendance:

    • Students with lice are not isolated and can remain in class for the day to ensure continuity in their education. After receiving treatment at home, students are welcome to return to school the next day.
  4. Support for Families:

    • If you are struggling to purchase over-the-counter lice treatment, please contact Nurse Miriam for assistance.
  5. Prevention:

    • To minimize the spread of lice, remind your children not to share personal items like hats, brushes, or hair accessories. Regular checks at home can also help detect and treat cases early.

Thank you for partnering with us to support a healthy learning environment. If you have any questions or need guidance, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the school office.

Thank you again,
