Annual Grill & Chill Community BBQ on Thursday!

We are so excited to get our entire school community together to hang out! Please mark you calendars to attend directly after school at 4:00pm!

Dinner is free to everyone and anyone!

Kona Ice will be on the playground for families to purchase on their own if they would like starting at 4:00pm as well!

This is a community event, so invite your friends! Family supervision of all children is required. DM staff will not be 'on-duty' during this event and all families are still expected to pick-up/sign-out students at 4:00pm from teachers. No students will be released and allowed to participate afterschool without being picked up by their guardian.

As this is a community event, it takes everyone to pitch in! Please sign-up to donate chips, a veggie tray, or dessert! The PTSA is generously providing the hot dogs, buns, condiments, and drinks. Additionally, we need some help! Please consider volunteering your time as well!

Late Arrivals, Early Pickups, & Attendance Policy:

We are committed to achieving our school-wide goal of each student attending at least 90% of the instructional school days throughout the year. This translates to each student not missing more than 1 out of every 10 school days. To that end, we are increasing our accountability and tracking systems at school, implementation of tiered supports for families to identify and remove barriers to attendance, and celebrate those that are meeting or exceeding our goals.

Chronic absenteeism is one of the primary root causes for students falling behind and the slow process of catching them up.

"Poor attendance can influence whether children read proficiently by the end of third grade."

"Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence."

Quotes from AttendanceWorks

If you are experiencing challenges getting your students to school at least 90% of the time, please reach out to Mr. Konz for support identifying and removing barriers! We will also be in contact as we will be running weekly attendance reports and pro-actively contacting families.

Reminders:

  • The school day starts at 9:00am. Please ensure that you are arriving on site by then to drop off your student. If you are late, you are required to walk your student(s) to the Main Entrance door and walk them up to the front desk. Students may not be walking themselves to the front door and the desk, they need to be accompanied. It is a safety concern. Tardies and missed instructional minutes add up to absences.

  • The school day ends at 4:00pm. All students must be picked up at 4:10pm. Late pickups after school are not permitted. Students who are picked up consistently late will need to enroll in our Discovery Link program.
    • Every time a student is late being picked up means that our staff is also late picking up their own children and taking care of their personal and professional lives. Being timely at pickup is an act of mutual respect.
    • Ms. Patty will not release students to guardians for early dismissal after 3:40pm--Grown-ups will need to wait until 4:00pm dismissal to receive their child.

  • Families are NOT PERMITTED to park on 9th Avenue in the Bus Lane before or after school for pickup and dropoff. This is a bus lane only for the DPS Bus, Warren Village Bus, Girls, Inc. Bus, and Open Door Vans. We will begin having an off-duty police officer ticketing families parking in the bus lane.

'Homie Heads' TikTok Trend/Challenge & Phone Policy Violations

Like in many schools right now, it has come to our attention that some of our students have been engaging in a Tik Tok challenge to "play fight" in the bathroom between classes during the passing period. Several of these play fights were videoed, texted to each other, and some were posted to a social media account over the last few days.

While many of you have already been personally made aware of this today and of how we are helping students to reflect on these behaviors, we also wanted to send home some resources to support talking to your student about phone and social media use. We take our responsibility to teach students about online safety very seriously. We will continue to have conversations, discussions, and lessons with students to support their learning in this area, and are also going to increase our monitoring of phone use during the school day.

As a reminder, students are not allowed to have phones on or out during the school day. They can keep phones in their backpacks, locked in the teacher's classroom in a designated cabinet, or can leave them at home. Phones that are seen out during the school day will be taken and kept in the office without a warning. The second time a phone is taken up, guardians will be called and asked to come get the phone at the end of the school day. If you would like to reach your student at any time during the school day, please call the front office and are happy to deliver a message, or allow your child to use any of our school phones to call you back. Thank you for supporting us as we work to make our middle school environment a learning focused, safe space to be for all!

Additionally, students that are found to be disrupting the learning environment with these types of violations of our school policy will receive escalating consequences moving forward.

You send your children to school to learn, not to get 'likes.' Please support us in having further conversations about this with your student tonight.

Additionally, if you are providing the privilege of a phone to your student you should be in the habit of monitoring their digital and social participation as we are hearing about more and more cyber-bullying and inappropriate behavior taking place on TikTok, Snapchat, Google Meet, and Instagram Live at home on the nights and weekends.
