Community Letter Re: School Consolidation Update
11/07/24, 5:01 PM
Dear Dora Moore Families,
I want to take a moment to address an important change coming to our school community. As part of the Denver Schools Thrive Initiative, and using direction from Executive Limitation 18 (EL-18), the Superintendent has recommended Dora Moore to be reconfigured to serve ECE through 5th grade for the 2025-2026 school year and serve as an elementary school moving forward. This means that starting next year in August, we will no longer have a middle school program for grades 6-8 on our campus. Grade level changes are an operational decision and under the authority of the Superintendent. This change does not require a vote by the Board of Education.
We understand that this news may be disappointing, especially for our students and families who had hoped to continue their middle school years at Dora Moore. We are acutely aware of the challenges this may also place on families that have both elementary and middle school aged students here. Please know that this decision was made after thorough consideration of the needs and resources across our district. The district’s goal is to ensure that all students have access to the strongest possible academic and extracurricular programs, and this realignment is intended to help achieve that.
Over the coming months, we will work closely with our families to make this transition as smooth as possible. We are committed to supporting our middle school families as they explore options for continuing education and to provide resources and guidance to help students adjust to new school environments. Additionally, we’ll be sharing information on how we plan to enhance our elementary programming to continue providing a rich, engaging, and supportive learning experience for all students.
SchoolChoice
As part of this transition, if we will no longer be offering the grade level your child will be in next year, you will have the opportunity to participate in the SchoolChoice process. As an impacted family of grade level offering changes, your child will receive a closing school priority. SchoolChoice Round 1 application window opens on Jan. 15, 2025 at 10 a.m. and will remain open through Feb. 18, 2025 at 4 p.m. Learn more about SchoolChoice here.
Ongoing Support During Transitions
I understand that transitions can be challenging, and I want you to know that we are here to support you every step of the way. The Denver School Thrives Toolkit for Dora Moore Students and Families has important information on resources and contact information to support during this difficult time. The toolkit also has information regarding a timeline for this process and opportunities to engage with the DPS School Board and District Leadership.
Please contact me at abram_janson@dpsk12.net with any questions or concerns or schedule a meeting with me through emailing Ms. Bianka to talk in-person.
