Ramadan Mubarak to our families that celebrate Ramadan!

Happy March!

All good things come in March--warmer weather, sunsets after 7pm, March Madness College Hoops, Spring Break, the return of Major League Baseball (Go Tigers!)... Truly all the good things.

March Will Be Our Month (To reach out school-wide attendance goals!!!!)
It is our collective responsibility to ensure each student is at school each day!

In March, we are trying something new:
  • Student-named/voted-on Classroom Incentives for each classroom who collectively meets our 90% attendance goal in March.
  • Individual raffle prize opportunities for individual students who meet our 90% attendance goal in March.
  • Increased hard-lines of accountability for families with egregious absenteeism.

  • A student who misses 10% (the equivalent of one to two days per month) or more of the time enrolled in school is considered chronically absent. This includes both excused and unexcused absences, as well as suspensions, and also includes late arrivals and early pick-ups
  • Chronic absenteeism is calculated by the minute - so arriving late and leaving early counts.

'When students are not at school, they not only miss out on valuable learning opportunities for the time they were absent, but they can experience long-term impacts that hinder their development in reading by third grade, achieving in middle school and graduating from high school.

One student’s absence also affects their peers and teacher as classroom instruction includes small group learning activities. For each student who is absent, teachers need to adjust plans, gather materials for make-up work and follow up to get each student caught up. Make-up work does not replace the in-person learning activities that happen daily, and students miss out on important social-emotional development that occurs throughout the school.'

What Can Parents Do?

There are a few practices parents can implement to help ensure their child is set up for success and attending class:

  1. Communicate with the school every time your child wil be late, leave early or will be absent.
  2. Schedule appointments after school or on days where there are no classes.
  3. Develop a back-up plan to get your child to school if something comes up.
  4. Make sure your child has healthy habits--handwashing and hygiene being #1!
  5. Going to bed on time, getting enough sleep and waking up on time.
  6. Lay out clothes and backpacks the night before.
  7. Monitor your student's attendance on the Parent Portal.

You can find additional information on steps to take to help set routines that lead to strong attendance from the Attendance Works organization.

There are more resources and information at regarding attendance at the district's website: https://www.dpsk12.org/page/attendance.

If you have tangible barriers to attendance--It is your responsibility to reach out so we can help. Email joshua_konz@dpsk12.net to talk about support available.

Golden Eagle Award Ceremonies; March = Curiosity

We had a huge showing of families for our short, but mighty monthly Golden Eagle Award assemblies on Friday. We are committed to increasing our family partnerships this year, and celebrating our students with you is an important aspect of this partnership. These assemblies are a short, public way to recognize each award winning student for the month that are nominated by teachers, and encourage all students to continue to live out our core values of Community, Kindness, Curiosity, and Excellence each day.

We are looking forward to honoring students demonstrating Curiosity in March!
