School Closures Research Project - The DAC wants to hear from you!

 

The District Accountability Committee (DAC) is researching the experiences of families, students and staff who have been impacted by the recent school closures. The final result of their research project will be a set of recommendations for the DPS Board of Education to consider, should they have to close schools in the future. Your stories are important and you can participate in two ways:

1. Complete an anonymous survey ***survey will close this Sunday, 5/4***

2.  Attend the virtual conversation on May 15th (sign up here)

El Comité de Responsabilidad del Distrito (DAC) está investigando las experiencias de familias, estudiantes y personal afectados por los recientes cierres de escuelas. El resultado final de su investigación será un conjunto de recomendaciones que la Junta de Educación de DPS deberá considerar en caso de que se deban cerrar escuelas en el futuro. Sus historias son importantes y pueden participar de dos maneras:

From DPS: Supporting Literacy at Home: Resources for Families (May 2025)

'As we enter the final six weeks of school, we want to provide you with additional activities that will support your child to ensure they finish the year strong and are prepared for the next grade level. Take 20-30 minutes to complete all the activities each day.

1. 1. Read Decodable/Student Books
      Have your child read their Decodable/Student Reader from CKLA/Caminos to you regularly. As children learn to read, it is important for them to read books with words they can read many times. This helps them build their reading accuracy and fluency. Log in to the Amplify Hub (click path instructions) to access your child’s grade level Decodable Readers. Listen to your child read the stories, ensuring they sound out the words instead of guessing.

• Read Words
  This activity helps students read words accurately and quickly. Use this language (Spanish):

  • Look at this word. (point to the word)

  • Watch me read the word: /h/ /o/ /t/ ‘hot.’ I can say the sounds of the letters and read the whole word.

  • Your turn to read a word. Make sure you say any sounds you know and read the whole word.

Continue in this way with at least ten words (word list). If your child does not correctly read the sounds and word, you should provide them and have your child repeat. The goal in this activity is to be both accurate and automatic. Watch an example from a DPS student and parent!
