Dora Moore ECE-8 School

Welcome Back! We are excited for 2023!

01/01/23, 2:39 PM

Hi!

Welcome to 2023! We are so proud of all the work our students and staff have put in during our fall semester and we are eternally grateful for all the support we have received from our families and community! The highlight of our work is bringing back the fun and joy of school in the classrooms and by taking many extended learning field trips off (and on!) campus. Our students went skiing at Loveland, to the Denver Aquarium, to the Denver Museum of Art, and to the Denver Performing Arts Center just to name a few. We have an extremely packed and busy spring semester with tons more learning to take place in and out of the classrooms.

As we have started to unpack and analyze our growth and data so far this year, it's very apparent we are making significant gains! However, we have been able to see in our data that, as educational research consistently shows, attendance rates put a clear limit on individual and collective student growth. Students who are missing an average of one day per week (or the equivalent amount of instructional time due to late arrivals/early dismissals) are not making as much progress as students who are not. Our best instruction and our social, emotional, and academic supports can not be accessed when students are not consistently at school.

With that being said, our number one wish/hope/dream/pursuit/goal for 2023 is to have a 90% attendance or better for every student! That means that on average, no student misses more than 1 day of school for every 2 weeks. It's a lofty goal but we MUST do it for our children!

We will continue to reach out and engage with families that are experiencing significant attendance challenges--and if you need help in removing barriers to attendance we need your partnership by also reaching out to us so that we can try to help! Though our resources are somewhat limited, we are committed to supporting every family in getting their students to school on-time and ensuring they stay for the entire school day.

If you need support with attendance, please email:

We hope you are well and we look forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday morning!

Sincerely,

Abe Janson, Principal

Jillian Watson, Dean of Instruction

New students are able to join the choir on Tuesday mornings starting in January. If you are interested, email the choir director, Travis Branam (travis@denverchildrenschoir.org)!

Coffee (& Bagels!) with the Principal on Thursday Morning--9:00am-9:45am!

We are bringing back something we started last spring--and you are invited to join after drop-off on this Thursday morning! Join us in the library to hear from the principal, Abe, about our progress so far this year, wins we have had, and some of the challenges we see coming in the future. Please bring your questions for the good of the group as well! Everyone is welcome and your non-school age littles are welcome to join too! Hopefully, we will see a lot of you there even if only for a few minutes!

Please ring in through the front door, get a visitor's sticker, and ride the elevator to the third floor!

School Tours and Open House for New Families

In pursuit of our goal of a fully enrolled school, which leads us to a fully funded school--We will be offering school tours for new and prospective families! Please spread the word! The most impactful gift you can give us as a school is your support and recommendation to families you know in the neighborhood and the city that do not yet attend Dora Moore. Please spread the word!

  • We will be hosting in-person school tours each Friday in January at 9:15 a.m.

  • *NEW* With such a great showing at our tours, it's important we start an RSVP system to keep track of the attendees!

Thank you!

We Are In Need of Subs!
Check out the details in the image above! We are always in need of high-quality substitutes! If you would like to know email HR_Guest_Teacher@dpsk12.org or visit https://careers.dpsk12.org/teach/teach-at-dps/substitute-teaching/

If/when you get into the system, send Abe (abram_janson@dpsk12.net) and Patty (patricia_celaya@dpsk12.net) an email so we can add you to our hotlist to call when we have vacancies! Thank you for considering!

Donations Needed: Warm Clothes and Coats!

In partnership with the PTSA, we are setting up a free clothing store at Dora Moore!  We are collecting clean, gently used or new clothes and coats for families in our community. If you have items you would like to donate, they can be dropped off in the front office! Our social worker, Josh Konz, our school psychologist, Sarah Cherabie, and our school nurse, Erin Brandt, are working to coordinate!

If you or your family are in need of these type of resources, please email Josh Konz at joshua_konz@dpsk12.net to get connected!
