Before & After School Options Update

Dear Dora Moore Families,

Thank you so much for your patience regarding before and after school options. As communicated previously, the provider we had partnered with to provide care backed out at the end of July. This was disappointing on many levels and created a significant issue for us given the timing and the challenging labor market.  We know how vital before and after school care is for our Dora Moore families and we have been working diligently to find an immediate solution. As a reminder as well, we are offering free, drop-in care for all K-8th grade students starting at 8:20am. Drop-in will take place in the cafeteria for K-4th grade and in the gym for 5th - 8th grade. The formal options below are for families needing care before 8:20am and for after school.

I am happy to share that we will have a couple of different options to start the year. We will continue to work with the district for a long-term plan. Unfortunately, we are not able to offer a viable solution for our ECE-4 students. If you have an ECE-4 student and you have absolutely no other option, please reach out to me and I am happy to try to help problem-solve with you. I apologize that we were not able to figure out a solution to this challenge in such a short time.

If you previously registered for care with Leading Edge and paid a deposit, that will be refunded to you. We will be working with them to ensure this happens in a timely manner.

Here are the options that we are able to offer for K-8 students:

Option 1: Before and After School Enrichment Through Dora Moore Staff

Though limited in capacity, this option provides an extremely cost-effective solution to our families who are in need. Additionally, we ask that families who have other options consider exercising those options at first in order to help to reserve these sessions for those that are in need. These are not the comprehensive enrichment offerings we have offered in years past. Those types of sessions should show up in the second quarter of school for students.

  • When you register, you commit to a consistent weekly schedule for six weeks (8/22-9/30).

Option 2: After School Partnership and Programming Through Girls, Inc.

Fall registration is now open for Girls, Inc of Metro Denver!  If your student is a girl who is entering 1st - 8th grades this fall and you would like her to participate in their after-school programming, please fill out the registration form here: https://forms.gle/kqpEiqFYAKNMiG718

Girls, Inc. programs require nominal fees. Fees are based on a sliding scale – no girl is ever turned away because of inability to pay.

Transportation to the Girls, Inc. program site can be available and provided by Girls, Inc. if five or more girls attend from Dora Moore!

Girls must have completed kindergarten and be at least six years old to participate in programs. Please know, this program does not start until September 7th.

School Bell Times

As communicated in the spring, our bell times this year are as follows:

  • 8:50am School Starts
  • 3:50pm School Ends

Registration Window Has Been Extended

All families must complete fall registration via Parent Portal prior to the first day of school. Failure to do so could result in your child(ren) missing the first day of school. If this is your first time using Parent Portal and you need support navigating this online platform, check out the Family Navigation Guide

All parents/guardians will need their child(ren)’s student ID number. If you do not know this number, you can call or email Patty Celaya at 720-424-5300. Additionally, our front office staff is back full-time now so if you would like to swing by the school for any reason, please feel free to do so.

Meal Applications Needed For All Families

All families to complete a meal benefits application for the 2022-2023 school year at this link: https://www.myschoolapps.com/ Due to the expiration of Federal Waivers that Nutrition Services has been operating under since the beginning of the pandemic, school lunches will no longer be free for all students in the 2022-23 school year. All students will need to be recorded by student ID numbers when they take their breakfast and lunch. Breakfast will remain no charge for all students. Lunch prices for 2022-23 will be as follows:

  • Elementary lunches: $2.60

  • Middle School lunches: $2.75

Money can be added to student accounts using www.MySchoolBucks.com. Families will need each student’s DPS ID number to create a MySchoolBucks account. If you do not know this number, you can call or email Patty Celaya at 720-424-5300.

The submission and approval of a Meal Benefits Application provides advantages beyond eligibility for free or reduced-priced meals. Submitting an application also helps ensure students receive the maximum amount of benefits they are eligible for, including discounts on bus passes and some school fees, such as athletics, and reduced AP testing fees. It also ensures schools receive additional resources to support healthy meals for students and afterschool programs. In addition, based on your application, you could be eligible for the P-EBT (Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer) program through the Department of Human Services. Please visit their website for additional information. Your assistance in completing and submitting the Meal Benefits Application is greatly appreciated and has the potential to help all DPS schools. All information provided is confidential and protected.

Purchase School Supplies

School supplies are items teachers and students need for the upcoming school year but are not covered by Dora Moore’s general budget. This year, in an attempt to be more thoughtful with our resources and also save families money, we have changed the school supply process. Instead of families purchasing school supplies on their own which often total over $70 per student, we are collecting a suggested school supply fee of $30 per student. The classroom teachers will use these funds to ensure each child has the supplies needed at the start of school and throughout the year. The only things a family will need to supply themselves are a backpack and water bottle for each student. (If you need a backpack, we do have a bunch to provide! Email Abe or Patty for assistance!)

School Supply Fees can be paid on MySchoolBucks! Please click on this link to pay your school supply fee. Be sure to indicate your child’s name in the “Name” field so that we can track this information easily at the school.

For families that can and would like to purchase an extra school supply fee to help cover the cost for any student who may need financial assistance, you can do so at the link above by increasing the quantity or doing an additional order. We thank you for your support and generosity!

Class List Update

We strive to ensure that all classrooms are diverse, equitable learning environments. Our primary consideration in developing class lists is equity.

Class lists will be published today at 4:00 p.m. Class lists for ECE - 5th grade can be found taped to the front door of the school and will also be accessible via Parent Portal. 6th - 8th grade are not published today due to a scheduling error in our IC system. They will be available first thing next week.

For student privacy reasons we ask that class lists are not posted on any social media platform.

Please know that though changes are seldom at this point in the year, there is always a possibility that we need to change a students teacher between now and the start of school to balance our lists. If your child experiences a change in teachers after today, we will call you and let you know.

Kindergarten Caveat

  • Each kindergarten student is currently on a class list assigned to a teacher and that is who they will start with on the first day of school.  Please know that during the first two weeks of kindergarten, your child will be spending time in both kindergarten classrooms. As we do not know a lot about our youngest learners yet, the kindergarten team will be observing students' strengths and needs and will make some shifts in the class rosters to ensure each classroom is a diverse, balanced, and equitable learning environment. At that time we will confirm for families the teacher their child will have for the rest of their kindergarten year.

Does Your Child Know Their ID #?

Every child needs to know their student ID number. This number will be used at various times throughout the school year. If your child does not know their student ID number, please help them practice it before the start of the school year. Student ID numbers can be found in Parent Portal. If you are not able to locate your child's student ID in Parent Portal, feel free to contact our main office at 720-424-3560.

Here is a pin pad template you can use when having your child practice their ID number. This is the same pin pad we use in the cafeteria.

Changes/Additions/Updates to Court Orders or Parenting Plans?

If any Dora Moore family has had a change to their court order (custody agreement, parenting time, etc.), or you are new to Dora Moore and have a court order in place, please send your most up to date court order to patricia_celaya@dpsk12.net and abram_janson@dpsk12.net by first day of school in order for us to update our records accordingly.

Zero Fare RTD Information for Families
During the entire month of August, RTD is offering zero fares across its system as part of the Zero Fare for Better Air initiative. This collaborative, statewide initiative, made possible by Colorado Senate Bill 22-180, in partnership with the Colorado Energy Office, is designed to reduce ground-level ozone by increasing the use of public transit. Current RTD customers will also benefit as they will not have to use or purchase fare products from Aug. 1-31, during Colorado’s high ozone season.
