Barney Ford Elementary

Weekly Update, Nov 2, 2023

11/02/23, 5:33 PM

Dear Families,

It’s November and we have a school-wide focus on gratitude this month. We are grateful for your support and for trusting us with your children every day. We also appreciate your participation on field trips, family nights, the book fair, and more.

Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage Month. While the history of tribal nations makes us aware of many painful and conflicted stories, we recognize the tremendous positive accomplishments of our Native peoples. From astronauts to actresses, physicists and educators, Native people have been leaders and a source of inspiration for everyone. We honor all our families who are part of tribal Nations.

First Friday

Tomorrow is our First Friday Coffee and Conversation with the principals. We will be discussing Barney Ford’s Title I status, the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC), and setting up for the book fair. We hope you can join us from 7:45-8:45.

Book Fair

The annual Scholastic Book Fair is open from Monday-Friday, November 6th - 10th from 2:45-4:00. Please stop by to purchase books for your children after school next week.

Safe from the Start Program

The Denver Children’s Advocacy Center began teaching the Denver Safe from the Start curriculum last week. This program teaches children skills that will help keep them safe from dangerous or abusive situations. Children also learn to ask for help when they need it.

Please watch this video to learn more about the program: English Video & Spanish Video

The program is divided into three units:

  • Personal Safety. This unit teaches children rules that will help keep them safe from potentially dangerous situations.
  • Touching Safety. This unit focuses on teaching children to identify unsafe touches and to say “No,” get away, and tell a grown-up if someone tries to touch their private body parts. Children are also taught to not keep secrets about touching.
  • Assertiveness and Support. This unit gives children a chance to practice getting out of unsafe situations and to ask a grown-up for help if they need it.

If you have questions about the Denver Children’s Advocacy Center or the Denver Safe from the Start curriculum, please do not hesitate to call us at 720-974-7232.
