Weekly Update: August 15

08/15/24, 7:05 PM

Dear Families,

Welcome back to school! We are so excited to start the new school year! Today was the first day of school for grades K-2 and it was lovely seeing our youngest scholars back in the building. Tomorrow students in grades 3-5 will begin the year from 7:45 - 12:00.

The regular school year begins
Monday, August 19 from 7:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. daily.

Changes This Year

Breakfast in the Cafe

Breakfast is free and available for all students. We will serve breakfast in the cafeteria instead of the classroom this year. Breakfast will be available from 7:30-7:45. Students can enter the building at 7:30 to eat. Students who do not want breakfast will stay outside until the bell rings at 7:45. ECE students will eat in their classrooms starting at 7:45.

Tardy Time is 7:50

This year students will be marked tardy at 7:50 instead of 8:00. All students need to be in their classrooms by 7:50. Students arriving after 7:50 are marked tardy and will be given 5 minutes to eat breakfast in the office before going to class.

Crossing Guard Support Ends at 7:50

Crossing guards and our Kiss and Go helpers will be on duty from 7:30 to 7:50. Please arrive by 7:50 each morning.

Uniforms

School uniform

All students are required to wear school uniforms every day. Uniforms help us create a special learning community where we take pride in our dress, behavior, and learning.  This link explains our uniform policy.  Hoodies, jeans, and crocks are not permitted.

We’re excited to announce that Barney Ford Elementary now has a convenient online web store for ordering school uniforms! You can easily browse and purchase the official uniforms from the comfort of your home. To get started, simply visit our new online store by Clicking Here.

Please use this link to explore the options and place your orders.

Toys, Snacks, and Cell Phones

We want to remind families that toys, large bags of snacks, and cell phones are not permitted at school. As stated in our family handbook, all cell phones need to be turned off and remain in a backpack or given to the classroom teacher during the day.

Collaborative School Committee

Each year the family community elects three parents or caregivers to serve on the Collaborative School Committee (CSC). The CSC plays an important role in our school by advising Principal Conroy on budget, staffing, and family engagement decisions. The CSC usually meets during the First Friday coffee a few times a year.  All are welcome to participate in the meetings.

Sign up here if you are interested in serving as this year’s CSC family representative.

Discovery Link

We are grateful to partner with Discovery Link again this year to provide free after school for our families. Registered families can have students stay after school up to 6:00 pm. This year the Discovery Link director is Ariana Rodriguez, ariana_rodriguez@dpsk12.net. Ariana is a bilingual Spanish speaker and is ready to help your family enroll in after-school care.
