Elevate Campus Safety Update

Dear DSST: Elevate Northeast Community,
It is our priority to keep you informed of incidents related to student safety. This morning, we learned about two photographs posted online showing two different DSST: Elevate MS students with a weapon. We immediately called the Denver Police Department and DPS Safety and Security to investigate.
Through the investigation, we learned that the photographs taken of both students took place on the same day prior to Spring Break. While DPD is investigating whether the weapon in the photographs was potentially a BB gun, we treated the incident with the highest urgency today and had both students searched and removed from campus. Searches revealed that neither student had the weapon on campus today. As with any student disciplinary matter, we are unable to comment on the specifics of the disciplinary action taken with both students. With that in mind, please know that we will be initiating a disciplined process through Denver Public Schools. Until that disciplinary process concludes, the standard process that we will follow is that students are not allowed back at school/on campus. In addition to the district disciplinary cycle, we will be working directly with DPD to ensure that ongoing investigations into this situation are done thoroughly in order to ensure the Elevate community remains safe. Finally, we have asked for additional presence on campus from DPS Safety & Security.
As a reminder to all students, it is never OK to bring weapons of any kind – real or fake – onto school property. Please take this opportunity to review safety messages with your student and encourage them to always report anything that doesn’t seem right to a school staff member or safety officer. Please remember to regularly check your student’s backpacks and personal belongings to help prevent them from bringing dangerous objects to school.
In order to maintain a safe environment, it is critical that students and others feel comfortable reporting to the appropriate adults when they know there are weapons in schools or activities that concern them. We encourage all students and community members to report to us immediately any suspicious activity or concerns. Safe2Tell is another resource families and students can use to share information anonymously. A Safe2Tell report shares information directly with school officials, DPS safety & security, as well as Denver Police - and is entirely anonymous. It can be used by students, family & community members, and school staff to report any concerns regarding individual members of the community or concerns of safety for the community at large

Hasta que concluya ese proceso disciplinario, el proceso estándar que seguiremos es que los estudiantes no pueden regresar a la escuela o al campus. Además del ciclo disciplinario del distrito, trabajaremos directamente con DPD para garantizar que las investigaciones en curso sobre esta situación se realicen a fondo para garantizar que la comunidad de Elevate permanezca segura. Finalmente, hemos pedido presencia adicional en el campus de Seguridad y Protección de DPS.
Como recordatorio para todos los estudiantes, nunca está bien traer armas de ningún tipo, reales o falsas, a la propiedad escolar. Aproveche esta oportunidad para revisar los mensajes de seguridad con su estudiante y aliéntelos a informar siempre cualquier cosa que no parezca correcta a un miembro del personal de la escuela o al oficial de seguridad. Recuerde revisar regularmente las mochilas y pertenencias personales de su estudiante para ayudar a evitar que traigan objetos peligrosos a la escuela.

Safe2Tell es otro recurso que las familias y los estudiantes pueden usar para compartir información de forma anónima. Un informe Safe2Tell comparte información directamente con los funcionarios escolares, la seguridad y protección de DPS, así como con la policía de Denver, y es completamente anónimo. Puede ser utilizado por estudiantes, familiares y miembros de la comunidad, y personal de la escuela para informar cualquier inquietud sobre miembros individuales de la comunidad o inquietudes sobre la seguridad de la comunidad en general.
