Youth Opportunities

Hi bulldog families, 

I wanted to share with you some youth opportunities for students. This is something that I already emailed all high school students, but I wanted to also pass this along to you. We typically only send these opportunities at least once a month to students. These are great ways for students to begin to get involved in their community and to also build experience on their resumes. Please let me know if you have any questions. 

I am sharing with you today lots of wonderful outside of school opportunities. These range from summer programs to fieldtrips with other organizations. Please see below to view all of these wonderful opportunities. Please let me know if you need help or have questions about any of the opportunities below.

 

1.       Youth Cohort ( A youth Fellowship opportunity)

Deadline to apply: March 31, 2023

Open to all students ages 14 – 20

Compensation available upon successful completion of the program: $2,500

Dates: June 5 – July 28 roughly 20 – 25 hours a week

Additional Info:

·         With a strong focus on justice, racial equity and inclusion, the Youth Cohort of the Piton Fellowship is a paid summer fellowship predominantly aiming to help aspiring social changemakers of color ages 14-20 learn from experts, grow as humans and connect with a diverse network of their peers. 

·         Fellows will meet in person at the Gary offices near Union Station roughly for 20-25 hours a week from June 5 to July 28 to Participate in individual and collective leadership learning exercises with experts in the business, policy and philanthropic sectors, which will give fellows the opportunity to provide actionable recommendations for social change specific to their communities.

·         Receive compensation of $2,500 upon successful completion of the program.

 

2.       TEEN SCIENCE SCHOLARS is a program in which teens complete hands-on summer internships alongside our research and collections staff at the Museum. This incredible internship allows for teens to get hands-on experience in various fields of science. Teen Science Scholar interns receive a monthly stipend, bus passes, and Museum cafeteria vouchers to offset cost of living expenses during the term of their internship.

 

ELIGIBILITY FOR TEEN SCIENCE SCHOLARS

·       Must currently be a Sophomore or Junior in high school

·        Must be available from June 3rd, 2023 – July 22nd, 2023

·        Must have an interest in learning more about science related research and/or collections

·        Teens who come from communities that have been historically marginalized from the sciences and individuals who will be the first generation in their family to complete a four-year college degree are strongly encouraged to apply

 

APPLICATION

·        Applications are now open and the deadline to apply is Monday, March 13th, 2023!!

·        Applicants should allow one to two hours to complete the application

·        Applicants should be prepared to answer an essay question, multiple short answer questions, provide information about their availability during the summer, motivation for wanting to complete the internship, and contact details for two people who can serve as references. References should be individuals who are not related to the applicant, and who can speak about their interest and need for this internship

3.       ELK Leadership Corps Meeting, Friday, March 17th from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm

    1. This will be a MOVIE NIGHT! Bring your blankets, pillows and friends! We will be serving food and ice cream, Movie still TBD.

  2. Horseback Riding, Saturday, Saturday, April 29th from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm
    1. Students will learn about horse care and riding etiquette at the Backcountry Wilderness area in Littleton!
