Action vs Reaction, Action vs Over Reaction
We often see students misunderstanding how to respond to an issue with a friend, classmate, or another student. Oftentimes fights and physical altercations occur when we misinterpret an action that causes an Over Reaction. Talking with your student about ways they can make sure that they have an appropriate reaction helps students resolve problems calmly and will often allow your student to avoid bullying situations.
Here are some of the most common miss reactions we see:
Action: Name calling, cussing, mean words
Over Reaction: Hitting or becoming physical.
Appropriate Reactions: Ignoring, walking away, asking an adult for help. Asking the other person if they are ok?
We might think that this is a student standing up for themselves or not allowing others to be mean to them.  However this is an unsafe over reaction. If we are in line at Target, and someone calls us a mean word, as adults we know that turning around and hitting is an over reaction.

Action: Running into someone on the playground and not saying sorry or that it was an accident.
Over Reaction: Hitting them, chasing them to push them back.
Appropriate reaction: Ignoring, asking if it was an accident. If hurt or need help, get an adult to help you figure out what happened.
However this is how most fights start at school.
Working with your student to teach them safer and more appropriate ways to react helps kids in the moment when conflict arises.
