Bothering vs. Bullying

Ms. Beth had a wonderful student lead conversation this week about Bothering vs. Bullying. Her and some 4th graders got to talk about what the difference was between bothering and bullying.
Bullying ~ Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. In order to be considered bullying, the behavior must be aggressive and include: An Imbalance of Power and Repetition.
Bothering ~ to annoy especially by petty irritations.

One of the things that kids acknowledge is most issues they deal with at school are not targeted behavior. We got to talk through the students' real life situations and discuss whether it is bullying or bothering.
This is a great conversation to continue with all our students at home. When they are talking to you about a situation they are dealing with, give them the tools and time to reflect on what was happening. Was it Bothering or Bullying? Knowing the situation will allow everyone to help the situation.
