School Safety

Making sure that McMeen is safe is our #1 priority. School Safety is everyone's responsibility. We value our partnership with our community to make sure every student has a safe and welcoming learning environment. Below are a few school safety reminders.

  • All parents/guardians and visitors must enter DPS buildings through the main entrance.
  • All visitors are required to have their identification scanned by the Raptor Visitor Management System. Please take a moment to read the Board of Education policies on School Visitors and Public Conduct on School Property.

Emergency Preparedness
McMeen participates in practice drills multiple times each year. It is vital that each student, staff member, and parent/guardian understand and follow our procedures during an emergency drill. Please talk to your student(s) about the importance of our emergency drills so that they understand how to safely operate in the case of an actual emergency.

  • Drills
  • Lockdown Drills
  • All schools are required to conduct a lockdown drill within 30 days of the new semester. The Department of Climate and Safety will be scheduling and observing lockdown drills at every school.
  • All lockdown and secure perimeter drills must be completed by Sept. 30, 2023.
  • Fire and Shelter in Place Drills
  • One fire drill must be completed within the first 10 days of school, and one must be completed every month after for the remainder of the school year.
  • One Shelter-in-Place drill must be completed per semester.
  • Tornado Drills
  • Conducted prior to severe weather season and designed to practice moving students and staff to a safe location within a building or structure in the event of a tornado or severe weather warning.

 Announcements

Saturday School Opportunity
Starting Saturday, September 16th, McMeen will be hosting Saturday School from 9am - 12pm.  Students should attend to help make up lost instructional time from the pandemic and/or from absences from school.  We believe that with this targeted additional instructional time on Saturdays, we can help address some academic gaps.

During Saturday School, students will receive literacy and math instruction to support their academic success and engage with some Social Emotional Learning (SEL), as an extension of what we do during the regular school week. Students should arrive promptly at 9 a.m. at the main doors on Holly street.  This is also the same location to be picked up at 12 noon. The school will provide snacks/ drinks as well as  prizes/gifts and books at the end of the program for students who attend.

Please note, learning time on Saturday is in addition to the time they attend during the regular school week and should not be substituted.  We hope you take advantage of this additional opportunity for your child to help prepare them for the next grade level.

If you have questions or concerns, please call Principal Hinman 720-424-5522. Thank you very much for supporting your student's education by helping her/him attend school and make up missed instructional time. The deadline for signing up is Friday August 25th.

More information and the sign-up can be found here.

Healthy School Meals for All: Complete the You Benefit! Form

All students in DPS will have access to free healthy, nutritious school meals beginning in the 2023-24 school year thanks to the Healthy School Meals for All program approved by Colorado voters! While meals will be provided for free to all DPS students through Healthy School Meals for All, families will still need to complete a form to ensure DPS gets full access to available federal funding.

What this means for families:
  • Please continue to fill out the You Benefit! form (formerly referred to as the Meals Application). We ask all DPS families to please complete the You Benefit! form during registration for the 2023-24 school year. By completing the form, you will help us access all available funds to cover the cost of meals, and other nutritional programs for students.
  • Families who fill out the You Benefit! form may qualify to receive discounted school fees, class materials, bus passes, utilities support and more!
  • All household income information provided through this form is strictly confidential and protected by law. Only one form is required for all children in the household. Immigration, migrant, citizenship or refugee status is not required when completing the form.

Learn more about the Healthy School Meals for All program in a short video in English and Spanishthis flier (Spanish is on page 2), or by visiting the Healthy School Meals for All website.

If you have questions about completing the You Benefit! form, please contact the DPS Food & Nutrition Services department by calling 720-423-5600 or emailing the foodservices@dpsk12.org inbox.

School Hours for This Year

As a reminder, our hours for this year will be 7:40-2:40. Please ensure you plan accordingly so students are not missing out on valuable instructional time.

Arrival and Dismissal Logistics

Our arrival and dismissal will run the same way that it has in the past. Both arrival and dismissal will happen on our playground.

Arrival

In the mornings, buses will park along Tennessee between Holly and the parking lot entrance. Please do not park here in the mornings as it can cause issues for our buses. Families can pull into the parking lot for Kiss-and-Go (no parking) starting at 7:30am. Families are welcome to park along the surrounding streets if they would like to walk their kids to the playground. ECE families are required to park on the street and walk their student to their class door in order to sign them in.

Dismissal

For dismissal, buses pull into the parking lot and the lot is closed off to families for safety reasons. We encourage families to park along the street and walk up to the playground. The space on Tennessee between Holly and the parking lot is open for parent parking in the afternoon. If you would like to make alternate plans for your child to meet you somewhere else for dismissal, you must communicate this with your child's teacher.
