Greetings McMeen Families,

Welcome! As we near the beginning of the 2022/2023 school year, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and to provide some health reminders. My name is Miriam Cavender, and I am the school nurse at McMeen Elementary. This will be my second year here at McMeen, and I am so excited to continue to be on this education journey with everyone here at McMeen.

Please review the list below to assure your student is set and ready to start the school year. If you notice one or more of the topics apply to your student, please consult with your child’s pediatrician to obtain health care needs and/or documents and medications.

Immunizations: Please make sure your child is up-to-date on all Colorado-state-required immunizations for the school setting. It is required that students are compliant with their immunizations in order to attend school. If your child is not compliant, they may not be able to attend school. You can review the requirements for compliance, and also access forms and other information regarding immunizations, including exemption requirements by clicking on this link: https://cdphe.colorado.gov/schoolrequiredvaccines

Medications: Please review the following information regarding medication administration found on the DPS Nursing and Student Health webpage at https://studentequity.dpsk12.org/nursing-student-health-services/

Medication can not and will not be administered to any DPS student without the appropriate medication agreement form completion found on the link below. This includes over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol or Motrin.

Forms from a previous year cannot be used for the following school year. A new form must be completed each school year.

Meal Modification: If your student has medical needs for school meal modifications, a current meal modification form must be completed and signed by a parent/guardian and a medical provider. You can find this form here: Medical Meal Modification

Asthma: If your student has asthma, please click on the following link for a checklist to assure your student will be prepared for the next school year: Back to School with Asthma Checklist

Annual Well-Child Visits: It's recommended that every child visit their pediatrician, annually, for a wellness check. If your child will be attending an Early Childhood Education (ECE) or preschool/pre-k classroom, it is required that your child has had an annual well-child visit and you will need to submit a health certificate to the school. You can ask your pediatrician for the form.

Denver Health School Based Heath Centers: DPS has Denver Health School Based centers that provide NO COST care to ALL DPS students regardless of insurance, citizenship or immigration status. If your student(s) is in need of immunizations or any other non-urgent care, these centers are a great options for families. If you are interested in these centers you can visit the website here: https://www.denverhealth.org/services/school-based-health-centers.
