2023-2024 McMeen Calendar

Here is the draft of our McMeen Calendar for the 2023-2024 School Year. All the planning days are finalized and we are working on finalizing dates for other McMeen events.

Chromebooks Over the Summer

DPS has changed their policies for chromebooks over the summer. We will now be collecting all chromebooks, chargers, and hotspots prior to the end of the school year. There will be a process for students to check-out their chromebooks for the summer if families so wish. We will share more information about the check-out process soon. In the meantime, please make sure your student knows where all these devices are as families will likely be charged for anything that is not returned.

DPS 'Your Voice/Tu Voz' Survey Opens May 1

All members of DPS (students, staff, and families) are asked to provide their input every year through the DPS 'Your Voice/Tu Voz' survey. Students and families will receive a link to the survey on Monday, May 1. Students will receive the link to their DPS email and teachers will provide time for them to complete it. Families will receive the link to their primary email address on file with the school. If you wish to opt your child out, you should have received directions on how to do so from DPS to your email this past Monday, April 17.

Attendance

McMeen is working with the district to address attendance concerns. When students miss too much school— regardless of the reason – it can cause them to fall behind other students. This can mean just missing two days a month. Our overall goal as a school is to get to a 95% attendance average. Below is a breakdown of this week's attendance by grade-level compared to last week's attendance. As you can see, we have some work to do.

Generation Teach STEM Academy (GTSA) for all 5th-7th Graders
GTSA is a free full-day camp for all DPS students in 5th-7th Grade that runs June 14-July 21. Breakfast and lunch are provided, as well as transportation to/from local middle and elementary schools. Students will take classes in engineering, math, reading, and law and will have afternoon enrichment classes in art, sports, games, and movement. They also will conduct field trips and fun Friday activities. Learn more here: English, Arabic, and Spanish.

Summer Academies Opportunity for incoming 4th-8th Grade Boys

Sims Fayola will once again be hosting their annual Fayola Man Summer Academies! The Sims-Fayola Foundation Empowerment Zone camp for incoming fourth- and fifth-grade boys will be held June 20-July 21 at Wyatt Elementary School from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Fayola Summer Leadership Academy for incoming sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade boys will be held June 12-July 7 at Vista Academy from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Priority will be given to Denver County or DPS-enrolled students. Register here.

Resources from DPS

Healthy Start Times

In May 2021, the DPS Board of Education passed a resolution to have all middle and high schools (district-managed and charters) start no earlier than 8:20 a.m. each school day to support healthy sleep habits in adolescents. The new Healthy Start bell times will go into effect for the 2023-24 school year. For more information please visit the Healthy Start Times page. The New Bell Times Toolkit is a resource for families and the community.

REMINDER Parent Resource Tool

FACE University has been re-launched as a parent resource tool. There are trainings and workshops across multiple topics, a resource hub, and more to come. You can subscribe for updates on the main page for when new content will be released. All content and videos have closed captioning available in 12 languages. Some of the resources they have are:

  • FAMILY LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE will feature sessions hosted in-person to dive deeper into advocacy and the school-parent partnership. There is a link to register on this site for sessions beginning summer of 2023.
  • CARING FOR STUDENTS IN THE AFTERMATH OF TRAGEDY  Access this virtual seminar to learn practical tools to take care of our students (and ourselves!) in positive, effective ways.
