Recess Volunteers
We are always looking for recess volunteers. Our recess runs from 11:30-1:10 everyday. We are happy to help you find the time your child is at recess if that is something you are interested in. The general idea is to provide a time for families to come and volunteer at recess and provide extra supervision. The sincere hope is that this is a fun way to support the school. We have put together a Guide for Playground Volunteers in English, Spanish, Arabic, and Farsi that goes over some basics of how to get started. You can sign up to volunteer at this link.
Announcements
Parking
We are continuing to get complaints from the neighborhood about people parking and blocking driveways as well as blocking crosswalks. Please be courteous to our neighbors and ensure you are following all traffic laws.
Building Safety
We have noticed a lot of parents/guardians have been letting others into the building. Please refrain from letting kids or adults into the building as it poses a safety threat. Everyone must check-in at the office so we know who is in the building at all times. Again, this is in the interest of safety for our students, staff, and families.
Indoor Recess
We have received lots of questions about indoor recess. We make every effort to send kids outside every day for recess. This year we have had more indoor days than usual because the blacktop is deteriorating and causing large pools of water, which have been turning to ice. We are working with the district to get our blacktop replaced, but in the meantime we have to make recess calls that prioritize the safety of our students. We will call an inside day when it is unsafe for our kids to play outside due to extreme cold or the presence of large amounts of ice. We do also call inside days if there is enough precipitation to leave kids' clothes wet after a 20 minute recess. Please reach out if you have any other questions.

Classroom Updates
Third graders are starting two new units this week! In literacy, we are beginning to learn about stories of Ancient Rome. This is an extension of a team students began to learn about last year in second grade. They are bringing all of their background knowledge to help create a really supportive learning environment. In math, we are beginning our fraction unit. We will be discussing the different ways we are exposed to fractions in our everyday lives. Please continue to do this with students outside of school! We are looking forward to continuing to learn about other cultures during our ELD blocks!
McMeen 4th graders have been researching inventors and their inventions and learning about the inspiration behind these inventions. They also completed building challenges with their lab groups. After much research and group work, students planned and created their own inventions. The inventions must solve real-world problems that many people face. Students worked together in groups to build a model of their invention and plan a pitch where they explain the problem, how it solves the problem, how the invention works, and convince the audience that they need this product. Students had so much fun collaborating and creating!
First graders had so much fun building their animal habitats this week!
