Recess Volunteers

We are always looking for recess volunteers. Our recess runs from 11:30-1:10 everyday. We are happy to help you find the time your child is at recess if that is something you are interested in. The general idea is to provide a time for families to come and volunteer at recess and provide extra supervision. The sincere hope is that this is a fun way to support the school. We have put together a Guide for Playground Volunteers in EnglishSpanish, Arabic, and Farsi that goes over some basics of how to get started. You can sign up to volunteer at this link

Announcements

Pokémon Cards

We have seen an increase in the number of Pokémon cards at school. We do not have an issue with students bringing the cards to school to play with during recess; however, we want to be clear that we are not responsible for lost or stolen cards. If a child is going to be super upset about the loss of the cards, please keep them home.

Field Trips and Volunteering at the School

As a reminder, if you come to the school, you must first check-in at the office and get a Visitors Badge. If you are volunteering for a field trip, you must complete and pass the Volunteer Background Check. You can fill out the background check online by clicking on the "Volunteer Background Check Portal" button on the DPS Volunteer Services Page.

Multilingual Education Districtwide Advisory Committee (MLE DAC)

The next MLE DAC Meeting will be on Wednesday, January 25th at Thomas Jefferson High School. Translation services will be provided. You can learn more through these fliers: English, Spanish, and Arabic

Classroom Updates

1st grade is having fun this week wrapping up our learning about animals and their habitats by creating visual models and demonstrations of our learning to share with others. Next up, we will start a fiction literacy unit about similar fables and folktales from around the world. Finding these similarities across cultures will pair perfectly with our learning about Lunar New Year which begins on January 20! We also look forward to exploring important accomplishments of Black Americans for Black History Month in February.

2nd Grade has been learning about Ancient Asian Civilizations! We are diving into India first and then China. Most recently we made paper lanterns to honor the way Hindus celebrate Diwali, or The Festival of Lights! It is a celebration of good conquering evil, lightness over darkness. Ask our second graders what they have enjoyed learning about Ancient Asian Civilizations so far!

In ECE last week, we started our unit on community helpers learning about Doctors and Nurses. Lucky for us, we have the most amazing, funny and caring nurse around right here in our own school and she visited our classroom. The students asked her a few questions about her job and then were able to take turns hearing her and their own heartbeats with her stethoscope. The students learned a lot and had fun at the same time.
