 Ways to Get Involved

Bike Tire Tubes

Recess Volunteers

We are always looking for recess volunteers. Our recess runs from 11:30-1:10 everyday. We are happy to help you find the time your child is at recess if that is something you are interested in. The general idea is to provide a time for families to come and volunteer at recess and provide extra supervision. The sincere hope is that this is a fun way to support the school. We have put together a Guide for Playground Volunteers in EnglishSpanish, Arabic, and Farsi that goes over some basics of how to get started. Please email Stacy West if you are interested at stacy1west@gmail.com.

Announcements

Lost and Found

With the cooling off of the weather, especially with the warm afternoons right now, we always see a big increase in our lost and found items. We have organized these items inside door 5 (labeled above the door), between the gym and auditorium. For the most part, coats and jackets with hoods are hanging on the wall hooks and all other sweaters/shirts are on the rolling cart on hangers. Water bottles, lunch boxes and backpacks are lined up to the left of the rack. There is a laundry basket under the rack with miscellaneous items (gloves, pants, etc.). Please take some time to look through the Lost and Found for any items your child(ren) may have lost.

Book Fair
The book fair will run the week of December 5-9th and will be open during literacy night on Dec. 7th. Please see the following flier for more information:

Virtual Art Show - Nov. 14- Nov. 30th

Click on the link below to enjoy our "Identity" art show.  All students at McMeen created an artwork to express who they are.  Through the sharing of our stories, we can cultivate empathy and knowledge in our community.  If you would like to have your student's artwork framed, frames are available for purchase.  Frames will arrive before winter holiday, so this could be a great gift for the family!  Proceeds from purchasing frames will go towards our art program.  Thanks for your support!  Please let me know if you have any questions (emilee_claypool@dpsk12.net). https://artomestore.com/collections/mcmeenelementary80246

Late Pick-up

We have had a huge increase in students being picked up late and them being picked up much later than usual. Starting November 15, we will charge $1 for every minute a parent is late picking up their child. As a reminder, we get out of school at 3:20.

REMINDER Vision and Hearing Screening

Our annual Vision and Hearing Screenings have been scheduled for January 24th-27th. Please reach out to Nurse Miriam if you have any questions at miriam_cavender@dpsk12.net.

Kindergarten, Amir Arshiya Etimadi - Amir Arshiya is an incredibly smart, humorous, and kind student! He has been working SO hard to grow as a reader and writer in our classroom. The other day during instruction, he told me "I am going to be a listener because I know this is important for my learning!" We appreciate his effort and the joy that he brings to our class! - Mrs. McReynolds

Classroom Updates

4th Grade - Fourth grade has been working on poetry during this literacy unit. Students have been able to analyze the theme of different poems, discover different examples of similes and metaphors, and write poems. They wrote a Bio Poem to display in our hall. In math, students are digging into how to multiply two digit numbers, breaking them apart, and showing how to build the equations using the area model. In SEL, students are learning about how to solve problems with others, how to show accountability, practicing gratitude, and what each of the qualities of a mighty mustang looks like.

3rd Grade -Third grade is starting all new units for both math and literacy this month. In literacy, we will be starting a new unit called The Human Body: Systems and Senses. We are excited to begin this new journey of learning how our bodies work and getting a chance to combine science and literacy. In math, we will be moving on to working with multi-digit addition and subtraction problems. The students will get the chance to show what they already know about addition and subtraction but using news skills and strategies to explain their thinking. As we get further into the school year, we are looking for our students to be independent learners. This means we are looking for our students to be responsible for getting work home, practicing spelling words and making sure they are sharing the family letters that are sent home.
