Ways to Get Involved
Bike Tire Tubes

Recess Volunteers
We are always looking for recess volunteers. Our recess runs from 11:30-1:10 everyday. We are happy to help you find the time your child is at recess if that is something you are interested in. The general idea is to provide a time for families to come and volunteer at recess and provide extra supervision. The sincere hope is that this is a fun way to support the school. We have put together a Guide for Playground Volunteers in English, Spanish, Arabic, and Farsi that goes over some basics of how to get started. Please email Stacy West if you are interested at stacy1west@gmail.com.
Announcements
Parents, we would like to remind you that smoking on school property is prohibited. This includes any and all vape pens, cigarettes and the like. Please reach out to Principal Hinman if you have questions regarding this policy.
Please be sure you make arrangements for on-time student pick up for afterschool. As a reminder, school gets out at 3:20 and the main office closes at 3:30. For students who are continually pick-up later, we will charge your school account $1 per minutes after 3:30. Please plan accordingly which includes making sure your students is enrolled correctly for Discovery Link.
When bad weather or other unexpected events make it unsafe for students and staff to come to our school buildings, DPS will have a delayed start or cancel school for the day. The superintendent will make a decision based on information provided by the DPS Transportation team, local transportation agencies and the weather bureau. You’ll find more details about what to expect below.
- If DPS schools remain open during severe weather: The district will monitor the weather throughout the day to ensure student safety.
- Buses will still be able to transport students, but there may be delays or other changes to service to make sure students and bus drivers are safe.
- Traffic conditions may require students to spend additional time en route to school, special activities, programs or at home.
- If severe weather begins during the school day, DPS may decide to call an early dismissal.
- Bus routes will run in the same order as normally followed in the afternoon. Please be patient, as arrival times may vary depending on traffic and weather conditions.
- After-school activities (athletic events, enrichment programs, etc.) may be modified or canceled as a result of the weather conditions.
If DPS calls a Weather Delay:
The purpose of the Weather Delay Procedure is to provide school buses additional time to pick up students and reduce student wait time in severe weather.
- Morning school buses will run on a delayed schedule and begin pick-ups at bus stops two hours later than the normal pick-up time. (Example: If you normally leave home at 7:45 a.m. for school, you would now depart at 9:45 a.m. to arrive at school on time.)
- Students walking, biking, carpooling or taking RTD are encouraged to leave home two hours later than they would normally leave for school. (Example: If students leave home at 7:45 a.m. for school, they would now depart at 9:45 a.m. to arrive to school on time)
- Breakfast will still be served to students as they arrive to school.
- Afternoon school buses will run on a normal schedule
If DPS schools are closed due to severe weather:
- Transportation will not run any buses.
- All after-school activities, including middle and high school sports, are canceled and transportation will not be provided for these activities.
- Please make the necessary plans for care of your student in the event that school is canceled.
How you will be informed:
In the event of inclement weather, district officials will make the decision by 5 a.m. If the decision is made to close or delay school, local television and radio stations will be notified immediately and broadcast regular announcements of school closures or delays. You can also visit thedenverchannel.com, 9News.com, kdvr.com and denver.cbslocal.com. Notifications in Spanish will be made on radio newscasts on 1150 AM, 1280 AM and 1090 AM.
www.dpsk12.org - Emergency School Closures or Weather Delays will be posted here and on transportation.dpsk12.org.
Social Media - Announcements to close or delay school will also be posted to Facebook.com/DenverPublicSchools, as well as @DPSnewsnow
Please do not have your student wear Heelys with the wheels to school. The wheels scratch our floors and make additional needs regarding the care and maintenance of our floors.

Classroom Updates
3rd Grade - 3rd grade launched into a new math unit on multiplication. We did an interactive activity called Thunder Mountain where students had a chance to explore multiplication in the real world. In literacy, we also launched a new unit on classifying animals where the students will get a chance to become taxonomists and learn how to make observations and become researchers. The students also got new spelling words this week, where they are practicing adding -ed and -ing to root words.
4th Grade - Fourth grade is starting a new literacy unit on poetry. We are learning about the elements of poetry, including line, stanza, stanza break, rhyme, repetition, slant rhyme, and various types of figurative language. We will be composing original narrative poems using poetic devices to engage readers. In math, we have started a unit where students will review concepts around addition, subtraction, place value, and rounding. In order to extend these ideas and keep 4th graders interested we are doing this with even bigger numbers, all the way to 1,000,000! During SEL, we are going to be focused on being self-aware. Having a healthy self-awareness promotes emotional wellness and self-esteem. As kids learn to improve their own perceptions and how to handle themselves they become more confident in their abilities. Self-awareness provides students insight into who they are, why they react as they do, and gives them a direction for self-improvement. Students were also able to go on their first field trip of the year this week to the McNichols Building to learn about Jazz with Ms. Q for music. They were able to practice being a good audience while they heard a jazz performance and learn from the musicians on stage in a Q&A session. It was an incredible experience for all of us and we are so excited to do more field trips as the year continues!
