Sponsorship Program
This year, the PTO is offering a sponsorship program to raise funds for new Promethean boards for the classrooms. We are looking for local businesses to support the mission through a monetary donation. Those businesses will receive recognition for their support in various outlets including a banner on Holly St.
McMeen families with businesses that are interested in the program can participate at a reduced requested donation rate.
If you or someone you know is interested in being a sponsor please email Andrea Lazar at andrea.lavine@gmail.com.
Recess Volunteers
We would love to start up our recess volunteer program again. The general idea is to provide a time for families to come and volunteer at recess and provide extra supervision. The sincere hope is that this is a fun way to support the school. We have put together a Guide for Playground Volunteers that goes over some basics of how to get started (we are working on getting it translated into Arabic, Spanish, and Farsi). Please email Stacy West if you are interested at stacy1west@gmail.com.
Announcements
Morning Reminders
As a reminder, the school day starts right at 8:20am. It is for this reason that we close the Kiss-and-Go right at this time. If you arrive after 8:20, you need to walk with your student to the main entry off Holly Street.
School Performance Framework
CDE just released their School Performance Framework (SPF) ratings for the first time since the pandemic started. McMeen was rated as orange on the scale. You can learn more by visiting the CDE website and reading this letter from Principal Hinman.
Collaborative School Committee (CSC)
Every year we nominate people to be part of the CSC, which supports decision making for a few things for our school. If you are interested, please fill out this nomination form.
New MUSTANG Traits
This year we decided to replace the Caught In the Act with new MUSTANG tickets. We still call names of winners on Fridays, and we call this group our Mighty Mustangs for the week (names of winners can be found under Student Shout Outs). These tickets are used to recognize students for positive behaviors and contributions to the classroom. We wanted to share these traits with you:
Mindful
Upstander
Self-Aware
Tenacious
Agency
Nurturing
Growth Mindset
REMINDER Gifted/Talented Magnet Testing
If you would like you to nominate your student for magnet testing please follow this link and nominate your child to take the COGAT. The nomination window will close 10/14. The cognitive assessment will be given at McMeen by me (Jenni Cessar). Only students in 1,3,4, and 5 can be nominated. Kindergarten and 2nd will take the NNAT this fall. If you have any questions, please reach out: jennifer_cessar@dpsk12.net
Student Shout Outs
Mighty Mustangs (these are students who were showing our MUSTANG traits this week and had their name called on Friday) - Camarion (3rd), Jade (2nd), Angelo (1st), Valentina (1st), Ricky (4th), Abdi (1st), Raul (1st), Eileen (4th), Iris (3rd), and Sadie.
Kindergarten, Ellie Mulvey - Ellie has transitioned so well from a smaller ECE class to a larger kinder class (which can be hard for the littles!) She is an incredibly kind friend and a wonderful student! - Mrs. McReynolds
Kindergarten, Aubrey Reynolds - Aubrey shows an incredible amount of resilience in the classroom setting. At first she was shy and cautious of building relationships with her classmates… and boy has she blossomed! She is incredibly kind and considerate of those around her, and all of her classmates want her to be their friend because of her many beautiful character traits. - Mrs. McReynolds
4th Grade, Cheyenne Clinton - Even though she is new to our school, Cheyenne has shown incredible leadership in the first weeks. She is someone who is consistently kind, respectful, and happy to support her classmates. - Ms. Caitlin
3rd Grade, Asmaa Mohamed - she is an amazing team leader and is always willing to help everyone around her! - Ms. Rabin
5th Grade, Miles Davis - he always comes in with a positive attitude and wants to help others! - Ms. Jaramillo
2nd Grade, Melody Gunn - Melody is such a caring person. She is willing to try, ask questions, and help others around her. She is a gem and I can't wait to see all of her potential this year in 2nd grade! - Ms. Homberg
4th Grade, Emmy Ryan - Emmy is so sweet and has jumped right in to our class routines and procedures. She is kind to her friends and brings joy and positivity to our class! - Ms. Fitzgerald
4th Grade, AJ Sheppard - AJ shared his thinking during a math talk which helped our class have a great discussion about place value. He's also been a big help around the class, making sure it's neat and organized! - Ms. Fitzgerald
ECE, Maynor Matamoros Pineda - In our class we feel happy and proud of Maynor because the transition from home to school has been easier than the first days. Now, Maynor comes to school happy and ready to play and learn. Also, Maynor interacts with his new friends and teachers respectfully and shows to be perseverant. Great job Maynor! Keep it up! - Maestra Rivera
3rd Grade, Ricky Lopez - Ricky has been an outstanding support for helping with extra classroom care routines. - Mrs. Toney
3rd Grade, Anna Batjargal - Anna has been outstanding with her partner talks and partner support during class time. - Mrs. Toney
Classroom Updates
1st Grade - This week first grade will be reading fables like The Goose that Laid the Golden Eggs in order to find the moral of the story. We will also be making our own number racks to practice addition strategies and facts within 0-20.
2nd Grade - 2nd Grade is working on our math facts within 120. We are using base ten blocks to represent numbers, determining the value of a digit, and writing them in expanded form. We are starting our first week of spelling, and applying skills to build our reading. We have been reading the story Cat Bandit and seeing what the kitty will be eating each day. During SEL we are building positive, respectful, problem solving skills with all. They are learning the same language and sign language that goes with each skill. We will be moving into Mindfulness soon after.
3rd Grade - Reminder: 3rd grade has a field trip to Balarat on Tuesday, September 13. Please see the permission slip that was sent home and reach out to your child's teacher with any questions.
