Assessing social and emotional skills

Dear McMeen Community,
As you know, we at Denver Public Schools are committed to your child’s academic, social, and emotional development. I am writing to let you know about an important initiative to help us in fulfill this commitment.
From September 5th to September 16th, we will be assessing the social and emotional skills of students at McMeen. The purpose of this assessment is to better understand how Denver Public School students are doing socially and emotionally. We will use what we learn to review our efforts to teach social and emotional skills for all children. Assessment results will be used to help adults support students; they will not be used to label or diagnose students.
The assessment will take about 30 minutes. Children will complete the web-based assessment on a computer. The assessment measures children’s ability to read others’ emotions, to understand others’ points of view, to solve social problems, and to remain calm when frustrated. To assess these skills, children look at pictures of faces and indicate what people are feeling; they listen to illustrated stories and answer questions about the characters and situations; and they complete two simple game-like tasks that require patience.
We strongly believe that this assessment will be helpful for all children who complete it. However, we recognize that some parents may wish to opt out of this assessment program.
If you do NOT wish to have your child participate in this assessment program, please email Principal Hinman. In your email please be sure to include your child's name.
