DSST: Cedar Middle School

Safety Incident at East High School

03/22/23, 11:07 AM

Dear DSST Families:

You may have already heard that there has been a reported school shooting this morning at East High School (not a DSST school). It has been reported that two adults were transported to the hospital with injuries, but we do not have much more information beyond that at this time.

We are actively working with our partners at Denver Public Schools to understand the situation, but at this time we do not have reason to believe that any of our schools are at risk. At this time we don’t recommend picking up students early unless previously planned.

DSST’s top priority is the safety of our students. We have strong existing precautions in place to keep our kids safe. We will continue to ensure all safety protocols are being followed with enhanced vigilance, including monitoring and buzzing in visitors at our main entrances, keeping other exterior doors closed and locked, video surveillance, staff training and drills for emergencies, and ensuring all staff and visitors have identification.

These are scary situations for our students, parents and school staff, especially when they occur so close to home. Here are a couple of resources if you feel you or your student need additional support:

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to your school director.

All my best,

Bill Kurtz
