Denison Digest: Week of April 4th

Good evening, Denison Montessori community. I hope that each of you found ways to enjoy time with family and friends over the break. I continue to be home recovering from a successful hip replacement. We have extra substitutes in the building so that our Senior Team Leads, Tara Crewe and Tori Cadle, can support the school with administrative needs in my absence.

I have to say, this has been a challenging time to be out of the building. Since becoming principal at Denison, we have endured a world-wide pandemic, virtual school, hybrid schools, and a return to school with the world on edge. The tragic events that have taken place within DPS and in schools across the country provide additional challenges to the complex and difficult work that our wonderful staff does each and every day and makes it hard for families to feel comfortable sending their children to school, wondering if it’s a safe place to be. Please know that our staff does everything possible to ensure your child’s safety. We continue to be vigilant each day, ensuring that all exterior doors are securely closed, that any adults who are not Denison staff are wearing DPS badges or visitors badges, and any safety concerns are regularly reported to the main office so we can work with DPS’s Department of Safety and, if needed, the Denver Police Department. We have added and repaired exterior cameras to the west side of the building due to issues with individuals in the alley earlier this year. Please understand that we take your child’s safety very seriously. I encourage you to extend kindness to each other, even in challenging or stressful situations, as we never know what stressors may be present in others’ lives. Take care of yourselves, each other, and our children as well move in the last two months of this school year. I hope to be back in the building soon!

Prior to spring break, many students in our community were struggling to manage online relationships via texting, group chats, social media platforms, and online gaming sites. Resources have been shared with our teachers to address these, and other socio-emotional skills, with our students. If you have concerns that you would like to share anonymously, please visit Safe2Tell’s website, for information or to make a report.
Our community partner, Montessori on Wheels, is offering summer programming during the month of June. Please check out the MOW Summer Program Flyer for more information.
As a reminder, there was a permission form (see attached) that was sent home before spring break that was due March 24th. Since school was canceled that day we have extended the deadline to Wednesday, April 5th. This permission slip is for the online application Transparent Classroom, the Montessori specific website that Denison Montessori uses for report cards, internal lesson planning and student progress monitoring . In order to continue using Transparent Classroom, we must have a signed release returned for all students. If you have multiple students at Denison, you may list all of your students on one form and return one form only to your oldest child's teacher. This request applies to all students, ECE3 through 6th grade. Thank you for your help in getting these forms returned to your child's teacher by April 5th!
Thank you for your understanding as all evening events were canceled on Thursday, March 23rd. We will share updated information about Watch Me Work Nights for Primary classrooms and room 108 as well as Discovery Link informational sessions as soon as we have it.
Interested in volunteering at Denison Montessori? All DPS volunteers must complete a background check before working inside or outside our school. Your approval is good for one year, so please re-apply this spring if you are planning to volunteer for our Cinco de Mayo festivities in May and you applied in April or early May last year.
The Denison Achieves Silent Auction is April 20th-21st. This brings funds for classroom support and materials. Kacey Bennett, FDM chairperson, manages this program. Raising Anti-Racist Children: A Practical Parenting Conversation, Virtual Webinar April 19th 6:00-7:00pm.
