Dear KCAA Community,

We have all heard at this point about the events at East HS. I wanted to inform you of a few action steps KCAA is in the process of working on. First, I ask that you please be patient as you enter the building. Our office staff often has multiple things going on and I am asking them to safely screen all visitors to the school. Second, you may have heard the DPS is putting School Resource Officers (SROs) in several comprehensive high schools across the district. Those buildings are the largest high schools in our district that serve grades 9-12. I wanted to share with you that I am personally advocating for one here at KCAA. We have had one in the past and it has always been a positive and functional arrangement. Lastly, our district is in charge of relaying all information regarding the incident at East. They will send all communications to our community. I want to thank you again for trusting us to instruct and work with your children. The safety of everyone at KCAA is always my top priority. I wish you all a safe and restful Spring Break next week. Classes will resume on Tuesday April 4th.

Tomorrow, March 24th, is non-student contact day, it is a mental health day for all DPS employees. Schools will be close.

Next week is spring break!! School will be closed and Monday 4/3 is a non contact day for students. We will welcome students back on Tuesday 4/4.

Come to Community Literacy Night! Join KCAA on Wednesday, April 26 at 6 p.m. in the upstairs library to hear from a local author and Kunsmiller alumnus. He'll be talking about his book "Silent Brotherhood" (which is about to be made into a major motion picture) and how he helped uncover hate in the Denver community.

Kunsmiller is partnering with Catch My Breath Vaping Prevention Program to combat the vaping surge among youth. All middle school students will watch Be Vape Free Just The Facts to learn about the risks of vaping. Students will then have an opportunity to process what they have learned with their advisory teacher. If you would like to opt-out of this prevention program, please sign and return this form.

Parents play a critical role in preventing vaping, please make time to talk with your child today. This handout has great tips for starting that conversation. Catch My Breath has great resources including a Parent Training Video (also in Spanish) and a Parent Toolkit (Spanish) with information on how to support your child, how to spot a vape, six signs your child may be vaping and other tools for tackling the vaping epidemic. For students needing vaping intervention, MyLifeMyQuit , is a free, confidential quit line. Additional resources for adolescents using substances can be found here.

Due to recent events, permission slips and money for the Bowlero Middle School fieldtrip scheduled for April 25th has been extended to Friday April 7th. Please note that if permission slips and money are not received by this date students will not be able to attend.
