Barney Ford Elementary

Weekly Update: October 26

10/26/23, 4:00 PM

Dear Families,

We look forward to seeing you at tonight’s Fall Festival! Doors open at 5:30 and the event ends promptly at 7:00. A DJ will be getting the dance party rocking in the gym. We will have a cakewalk in the music room. A family photo booth will also be set up taking boo-tiful pictures. The evening will end with trick-or-treating in the cafe from 6:30-7:00.

A few important notes about the evening:

  • Only current Barney Ford students and their younger siblings may attend. No older middle/high school students will be admitted.
  • All students must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
  • Students can wear family-friendly costumes. Costumes may not be gory, have a full face mask, or include weapons.

Safe from the Start Program

The Denver Children’s Advocacy Center will begin teaching the Denver Safe from the Start curriculum in your child’s next week. This program teaches children skills that will help keep them safe from dangerous or abusive situations. Children also learn to ask for help when they need it.

Please watch this video to learn more about the program: English Video & Spanish Video

The program is divided into three units:

  • Personal Safety. This unit teaches children rules that will help keep them safe from potentially dangerous situations.
  • Touching Safety. This unit focuses on teaching children to identify unsafe touches and to say “No,” get away, and tell a grown-up if someone tries to touch their private body parts. Children are also taught to not keep secrets about touching.
  • Assertiveness and Support. This unit gives children a chance to practice getting out of unsafe situations and to ask a grown-up for help if they need it.

If you have questions about the Denver Children’s Advocacy Center or the Denver Safe from the Start curriculum, please do not hesitate to call us at 720-974-7232.

We will be sending home an informed consent form for this program. Only return the form if you do NOT want your child to participate in Safe from the Start.

Candy, Chips and Drinks

Our students are learning about eating healthy and taking good care of themselves. To help with this please do not send large amounts of candy or big bags of chips to school. Large quantities of these treats often create conflicts between students and are not good for fueling learning.

Caffeinated drinks such as Prime and other sodas are not permitted at school. We have several filtered water bottle fountains throughout the school for students to fill up their water bottles. Read more about why Prime Energy drinks are not safe for kids here.

Attendance Update

Our overall attendance rate for the year is 92%. We are aiming for 95% and need your help to reach it. Fridays and Mondays are the days that students miss the most. Please send your student to school each day to maximize their learning opportunities.

Last week 5th graders had the best attendance in the school, 92.4%149 students had perfect attendance in October. They will be celebrated at Monday’s Morning Motivation.
