Dear DSST: Cole Community,
It is our priority to keep you informed of incidents related to student safety. This afternoon there was a physical altercation between two students. We immediately placed the school on a “Hold” to ensure the safety of all students not involved (students remain in their classrooms in order to keep the hallways clear). We also contacted the Denver Police Department and DPS Safety in order to keep the community safe and address the situation.
This was an isolated incident between two students, and as soon as both students were safe and accounted for, we initiated an investigation, which is still ongoing. One student appears to have injured themselves on a piece of building equipment in the conflict. There are some student reports that a knife was present during the incident. The student alleged to have the knife will not be in school until we finish our thorough investigation. We will also follow the DPS Discipline Matrix for next steps for the students involved. All other students were safe throughout the incident.
Please know that the safety of all of our students is of the utmost importance to us as a school community. While our staff is extremely vigilant when it comes to these matters, it is important our students also understand and feel empowered to help keep the school safe. As a reminder to all students, it is never OK to engage in physical altercations. Please take this opportunity to review safety messages and conflict resolution with your student and encourage them to always report anything that doesn’t seem right to a school staff member or safety officer.
