Dear Teller Families,
I hope this letter finds you well. We are looking forward to sharing Thanksgiving lunch with our families this Thursday. It’s always a joy to spend time with those who help make our school community so vibrant and connected.
Over the past week, I’ve worked closely with the district to communicate how Teller Elementary School could be impacted if Palmer Elementary School closes under the Denver Schools Thrive Initiative. Below are the two letters I sent last week to share information:
I understand that additional information has been circulating through outside sources, which may lead to confusion or concern. I want to take a moment to address some of these concerns and provide clarity, so our community has the correct information moving forward.
Today, I had the opportunity to sit down with our Superintendent, Dr. Marrero, DPS Board President, Dr. Olson, and Director Esserman to address questions and concerns about the Denver Schools Thrive Initiative. Our conversation was very productive and extremely helpful.
Key Takeaways:
First, and most importantly, Teller is and will remain an inclusive school. If Palmer closes, we will warmly welcome all students and families who join us because we firmly believe that all of our kids are all of our kids.
Second, I want to reassure families currently living within the Teller boundary that they will retain proximity priority under the proposed enrollment zone. This means that the likelihood of securing a seat at Teller remains extremely high.
Third, Teller and the district are committed to keeping families together. Siblings of current Teller students will be given priority, helping to ensure that children from the same family can attend the same school.
Fourth, Teller is dedicated to maintaining class sizes that support an optimal learning environment. If this initiative moves forward, we will work closely with the district to set enrollment numbers that align with this goal, ensuring that we can provide the high-quality education and community feel that Teller is known for.
Finally, I want to take a moment to reflect on how fortunate we are as a community. While change can be challenging, it is essential to approach this situation with compassion and understanding. Many of the impacted schools and families are facing significant uncertainty, and Teller has an opportunity to serve as a beacon of support and inclusion. Let’s take a deep breath, remain calm, and focus on how we can come together to help those navigating this transition.
Thank you for your ongoing partnership, trust, and kindness as we work through this process together.
Best,
Sabrina Bates, Principal
