8. Get Ready for Walk, Bike, Roll to School Day!

It’s time to lace up those sneakers, pump up those bike tires, or put together a carpool for the Annual National Walk, Bike, & Roll (and Carpool) to School Day on October 9, 2024! 🎉

This year’s celebration is special because Teller is one of two schools in the district to be named a Green Flag Eco-School by the National Wildlife Federation. This is NWF’s highest honor. Stay tuned for a video made by the Earth Rangers highlighting the eco-groovy activities going on at Teller.

Join the Earth Rangers and Teller Leadership on the blacktop from 7:00 - 7:35 AM for a morning full of fun! Whether you’re walking, biking, rolling, or carpooling, let’s make this a day to remember!

Here are several ways you can help keep Teller Green:

    • Design Teller’s Eco-Code. Kids, Teller needs its own Eco-Code. Your teachers will give you details on Tuesday, October 8 during PRIDE time. Turn in your 8.5” X 11” poster submission before the end of school on Wednesday, October 9 to Ms. Treisi. If your Eco-Code poster is adopted, you will win a free “Stay Green Denver Public Schools” water bottle (designed by Earth Rangers)!
    • Take charge of Teller’s 2024-2025 Eco-Certification application. Parents, we need a dedicated volunteer to keep track of Teller’s eco-groovy activities this year and to submit the application to the National Wildlife Federation. Contact heather.b.jackson@gmail.com if you are willing to take on that role.
    • Support the garden. We need adults to help students working in the garden (every Teller student works with it once per year), as well as maintaining the garden over the summer.  Contact Lisa Davis, garden coordinator, at lisa@denverdavis.com if you would like to help.
    • Support the pantry. Check out Teller Pantry Friends website for open pantry hours, volunteer and donation opportunities, and events. You can also reach out to contact@tellerpantry.org with questions and for info.
    • Support Teller’s Annual Book Swap!  Please save your gently used books to donate to our Book Swap in the spring.
    • Support Earth Rangers. Earth Rangers are raising funds by selling eco-groovy 25 oz. single wall stainless steel “Stay Green Denver Public Schools” water bottles at Walk, Bike, and Roll. (Designed by Earth Ranger & Teller alum, Halle Jackson.) Buy yours at Walk, Bike, & Roll. Bottles are $20.

13. Attention 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade families: Fall CogAT Testing

If you are interested in having your child take the CogAT assessment this fall, please complete the nomination form. Applications can be found at the link here. Applications for testing are due by 5 PM next Friday, October 11th.  Students can only take one cognitive assessment per calendar year, so if your child was already given the NNAT or the CogAT in the past calendar year (spring 2024), they cannot be assessed again this fall.

New guidance for the 2024-25 school year advises that students should only take cognitive tests once every three years. After reviewing our nomination testing processes and score outcomes, DPS GT recommends not nominating students every year for cognitive testing. If your child is in Kindergarten or 2nd grade, there is no need to sign up for cognitive testing since the NNAT and NGAT are already provided to all K and 2nd grade students who are not already identified.

To find out more information about CogAT testing and GT programming, please visit DPS's GT website at https://gt.dpsk12.org/o/gifted or reach out to Marian Dorsey at marian_dorsey@dpsk12.org.
