Principal Bates Family Update

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are you doing?” The boy replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.”

“Son,” the man said. “Don’t you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make a difference!”

After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it back into the surf.

Then, smiling at the man, he said…

“I made a difference for that one.”

About a month ago, my husband and I made the decision to follow one of my life-long dreams and host a child from Colombia this winter.

In Colombia, children in orphanages “age out” and are no longer considered adoptable at the age of 16.

With that being said, we, along with nine other families are participating in a host to adopt program. All of us are hosting a child or children who are on the verge of aging out and want nothing more than a forever family.

The Bates family will be welcoming Dayana (13) to our family on November 30, 2022.

During this hosting period, I will be taking a leave of absence from work. I am taking the three weeks in between Thanksgiving Break and Winter Break in order to bond with Dayana. Mr. Smartt and Mr. Hernandez have graciously agreed to split my responsibilities and cover for me while I am out. Over the few weeks, I will be preparing for my leave. I will ensure everything is planned and prepared so Teller continues to run like a well-oiled machine during my absence.

I would like to thank my students, staff, and families in advance for your love and support during this time. I look forward to sharing our host to adopt journey with all of you upon my return. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out with any questions and/or concerns you have.

Sincerely,

Sabrina Bates

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at Teller

Over the past month, the students and staff at Teller have been celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual celebration of the history and culture of the U.S. Latinx and Hispanic communities. The event, which spans from September 15th to October 15th, commemorates how those communities have influenced and contributed to American society at large.

On Thursday, October 13th, our students had the opportunity to listen to Bryant-Webster's El Mariachi Juvenil de Bryant-Webster perform live for our students. We enjoyed listening to a variety of songs, and we even learned how to “grito.” In addition to the Mariachi band, our students watched Folklórico dancers perform in our gym, and even got to learn some new dance moves.

Lost and Found

Please stop by to take a look at lost and found items located outside the main entrance. We will be donating all unclaimed items on Friday, October 21st.

Congratulations Mrs. Bates & Mr. Smartt

On Friday, October 7th, Mrs. Bates and Mr. Smartt graduated from the Cahn Fellows Program for Distinguished Leaders. They flew to New York City to present on the work Teller has been engaged in to support the social-emotional wellbeing of our Black students. You can view their presentation here, or read their research paper here.

Halloween Celebrations

With Halloween right around the corner, we wanted to make sure you had the most up to date information regarding Teller’s Halloween celebrations this year.

All classes will be celebrating Halloween on Friday, October 28th. Individual classroom parties will occur the last hour of the school day (unless otherwise communicated by your child’s teacher), followed by our Fall Festival from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

To help us prepare for Halloween festivities, please send your child to school in their costume to wear all day. As a reminder, the following costume rules apply:

1. No fake weapons of any kind (including but not limited to: knives, swords, guns, lasers, lightsabers, etc.)

2. No blood/gore

3. Halloween masks may only be worn during the fall festival, not during the school day.

4. Shoes must be dress code appropriate

If a student’s costume is deemed inappropriate, we will contact home for a change of clothes.

Teachers will include classroom specific celebration details in their weekly email. If you have any questions about classroom celebrations, please reach out to your child’s teacher.

TELLER TOWN HALL : TELLER CURRICULUM AND CREATING AN INCLUSIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

When: October 18, 2022; 6PM-7:30PM

Where: Teller Auditorium (In-person only; no Zoom option)

Pizza and babysitting provided!

The first Teller Town Hall will feature a macro-level overview of Teller’s curriculum across grade levels with a deeper dive into real life examples from some of Teller’s very own teachers. Additional discussion will focus on Teller’s social-emotional curriculum, including the Behavioral Emotional Screening (BESS) assessment. Following the curriculum overview, hear from a subject matter expert about why certain topics are important to address in school settings. Finally, learn about ways that you can help Teller maintain an authentic and safe learning environment through systems advocacy and other efforts at home.

Please note that there will be scheduled time for questions and answers during the Town Hall. Please send questions that you have in advance, to communications@tellerpta.org by Monday, October 17.
