Illness Policy Update

07/18/22, 4:48 PM

Good Evening Howell Families,

As we continue to transition into a more stable phase on the COVID-19 pandemic you will see us begin to monitor and manage ill students in a very different way going forward.

When your student is absent for any reason (including illness) you must call the Attendance Line at 720-424-2746, send an email to your office team at FBHowell@dpsk12.org, or submit an absence notification through the ReachWell App (previously called Flyer App.) Please include details about the absence and your student’s symptoms if they are sick.

We will no longer be following up with individual families regarding when to return to school, unless we determine additional information is necessary or your student has been diagnosed with a specific illness and you notify us in your message. If you have specific questions about when your student may return to school, please contact my office at 720-424-2746.

For more information about when your student may return to school, please review the How Sick is Too Sick? document provided by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Unfortunately that document has not yet been translated into Spanish at this time.

When can your student return to school?

It is highly recommended that students with any of the following symptoms be evaluated for COVID-19 before returning to school; these are often present in individuals with COVID-19 and other contagious infectious diseases. Evaluation can be with a healthcare provider or by completing an at-home rapid COVID test.

  • Feeling Feverish, having chills or Fever

  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

  • Nausea, Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Cough

Families can order free COVID-19 tests to be delivered to their home by going to:

https://www.covidtests.gov/

With a negative COVID test or after evaluation by a healthcare provider, students may return to school once their cough, shortness of breath, fever, diarrhea and vomiting have fully resolved and they have been free of fever, diarrhea and vomiting for at least 24 hours.

Without a negative COVID test or after evaluation by a healthcare provider, I request that your student stays home the default 5 day isolation period. They may return to school once their cough, shortness of breath, fever, diarrhea and vomiting have fully resolved and they have been free of fever, diarrhea and vomiting for at least 24 hours.

I know we have had a lot of changes over the last couple of years and I look forward to to getting back to a new normal together and ensuring our students are present at school, well enough to participate, and ready to succeed academically.

Sincerely,

RICHARD RUTHERSBY, BSN, RN, NCSN
