DSST: Elevate Northeast High School

Campus Incident Communication

11/06/23, 2:14 PM

Dear DSST: Elevate Campus Community,

It is our priority to keep you informed of incidents related to student safety. Today around noon we were notified by an Elevate parent that a middle school student on campus had a weapon in their possession. We immediately isolated the student and called the Denver Police Department and DPS Safety & Security to investigate.

We ultimately learned that there was a BB gun in the student’s possession. While we continue to investigate this situation, we are aware that the student showed the BB gun to several students throughout the day. The student is now in police custody and we will be taking appropriate disciplinary action in partnership with and following the required matrix of Denver Public Schools.  Please know that the safety of all of our students is of the utmost importance to us as a school community. While our staff is extremely vigilant when it comes to these matters, it is important our students also understand and feel empowered to help keep the school safe. We are greatly appreciative of the families who reached out today.

As a reminder to all students, it is never OK to bring weapons of any kind – real or fake – onto school property. Please take this opportunity to review safety messages with your students and encourage them to always report anything that doesn’t seem right to a school staff member or safety officer.  Please remember to regularly check your student’s backpacks and personal belongings to help prevent them from bringing dangerous objects to school.

In order to maintain a safe environment, it is critical that students and others feel comfortable reporting to the appropriate adults when they know there are weapons in schools or activities that concern them. We encourage all students and community members to report to us immediately any suspicious activity or concerns or contact Safe2Tell at (877) 542-7233.

Thank you for your support in keeping our students and campus safe. As always, feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Briana Mesa
