Safety & Security Information for Parents and Guardians

At Frontier Academy, student safety is our top priority. We have used The “I Love U Guys” Foundation’s Standard Response Protocol (SRP) for many years. The Foundation continues to update its protocols and language. This communication is to inform you of current practices.

Below is an overview of the protocols and what your child will do in each scenario.

If you have any questions, please get in touch with your respective Security Officer.

Standard Response Protocol

1. Hold – "In Your Classroom Area"

Action: Students should clear the hallways and remain in their classroom or designated area.

Purpose: To maintain order and ensure that students are not moving through hallways during a potential threat or disruption. This action helps to prevent congestion and confusion while maintaining a safe environment. Normal activities will continue in the classroom.

Student Instruction: Continue working or learning in the classroom, and wait for further instructions.

2. Secure – "Get Inside. Lock Outside Doors"

Action: Students are trained to return inside the building and secure all exterior doors. This typically happens in response to an external threat or suspicious activity outside the school.

Purpose: The goal is to prevent any external threat from entering the building while maintaining normal operations inside. It helps contain the threat outside and prevents students from being caught in hallways or other vulnerable areas.  Normal activities will continue in the classroom.

Student Instruction: If outside, immediately go back inside, and lock doors to ensure security.

3. Lockdown – "Locks, Lights, Out of Sight"

Action: Students and staff should lock classroom doors, turn off the lights, and move out of sight from windows and doors. Silence all communication devices and stay as quiet as possible.

Purpose: To protect students and staff from an active threat inside the building, such as an intruder. Locking doors and staying out of sight helps prevent detection by the threat and buys time for law enforcement or other first responders to act.

Student Instruction: Stay silent, out of sight, and do not open the door under any circumstances.

4. Evacuate – "To a Location"

Action: If evacuation is necessary (e.g. for fire, bomb threat, or natural disaster), students are trained to leave their personal belongings behind if required and, if possible, take their phones. Follow staff instructions to evacuate the building and go to a designated safe location.

Purpose: Evacuation is essential when staying in the building poses a greater risk than leaving. This action ensures that everyone moves to a safe location away from potential hazards such as fire or structural damage.

Student Instruction: Leave belongings behind, take your phone if safe to do so, and follow evacuation procedures to the designated assembly area.

5. Shelter – "State Hazard and Safety Strategy"

Action: Depending on the type of emergency, students are trained to move to a safe area (such as an interior room for a tornado) and follow specific safety protocols for the hazard (e.g., covering heads for an earthquake, and protecting airways for chemical spills).

Purpose: This action is designed to protect students from specific types of threats such as severe weather, chemical hazards, or other environmental dangers. The safety strategy will vary based on the hazard so it’s important for students to know the proper response for different situations.

Student Instruction: Follow the appropriate safety strategy for the hazard. For example, in a tornado, students should take shelter in an interior room, get low, and cover their heads. In the case of a chemical spill, students should follow evacuation or containment instructions.
